Our First Motorhome Trip

We hired a Motorhome from 'Trek Trailers Lincolnshire'. A swift Voyager and decided to take it out and see how we got on.

From the moment we picked it up we were hooked. This was what we wanted, this is where we wanted to be.

In October 2024, we hired a Swift Voyage 475 for a weekend to dip our toes into the world of motorhoming. We knew the layout wasn’t ideal for us, but it was available locally and we thought it would at least give us a feel for life on the road.

We headed to Sheffield and based ourselves at Waleswood Caravan and Camping Park. What a brilliant site – spotless facilities, friendly staff, and a beautiful country park on the doorstep for long walks and water sports.

It didn’t take long for us to appreciate the joys of motorhome travel: arrive, fill up with water, park, plug in… and relax!

The sleeping arrangements, however, were another story. The over-cab bed just wasn’t for us; climbing a ladder after a gin and tonic (or two!) didn’t feel like the smartest move. The rear lounge could convert into a bed, but the thought of building and dismantling it every day wasn’t ideal either.

The motorhome itself was great though, and it got us exploring the different layouts in the Voyager range. We even chatted to another couple on site who had a different model, and their tips were really helpful. We quickly discovered that motorhomers LOVE to share their opinions — so don’t be shy, have a chat!

Of course, the weekend wasn’t only about testing a motorhome. We’d booked tickets to see Les Misérables - The Arena Spectacular Tour at Sheffield Utilita Arena, starring Michael Ball and Alfie Boe. The show was incredible, and to top it all off we bumped into friends afterwards who kindly gave us a lift back to the campsite.

Somewhere between the show, the campsite sunsets and a box of beer (which doubled perfectly as a “notepad” because we had no paper), we started planning something bigger: the NC500. We booked our annual leave right there and then and began the hunt for a Swift Voyager 594 to hire.

They weren’t easy to find, but eventually we tracked one down at Motor Escapes in Edinburgh. We’d have preferred an automatic, but the only one available was a manual — so manual it was!

And that was it: route scribbled on the beer box, motorhome booked, holidays approved.

In September 2025, our NC500 adventure would begin.
