The NC500 - Day Two and Three:
On day two we made our way to Nairn, a 160-mile drive to Barrow Campsite Nairn. It’s another lovely site—slightly more basic than our first stop, but absolutely spotless with a peaceful, tucked-away feel. From our pitch we had a view of Hangman’s Cairn, a Bronze Age monument just outside the campsite, which gave the whole place a really special atmosphere. We decided to stay for two nights to recharge after the long drive.
The journey itself was a highlight. Driving through the Cairngorms National Park was breathtaking, with sweeping mountains, rugged landscapes and endless open views. Passing through Spittal of Glenshee felt like travelling through the heart of the Highlands—wild, dramatic, and completely stunning.
On the way we even stumbled across a marching band taking part in the Braemar Gathering, which was such an unexpected and brilliant surprise. One of those perfect “right place, right time” moments.
Once in Nairn, we headed down to the beach and enjoyed fish and chips overlooking the water—simple, peaceful and just what we needed after a full day on the road.
